Pay Philosophy

The typical starting salary range ($107,000 – $140,000) for this role is determined by a number of factors including skills, experience, education, certifications and location. The full salary range for this role reflects the competitive labor market value for all employees in these positions across the national market and provides an opportunity to progress as employees grow and develop within the role. Some roles at Liberty Mutual have a corresponding compensation plan which may include commission and/or bonus earnings at rates that vary based on multiple factors set forth in the compensation plan for the role.


This position is a remote position. However, depending on the candidate’s location, it could be hybrid and require a minimum of 2 days in office. Hybrid locations include: Boston MA, Portsmouth NH, Seattle WA, Columbus OH, Plano TX.


Our Talent Practices & Employee Rewards team is looking for a Compensation Advisor to support the compensation strategy for Liberty Mutual’s insurance businesses.

The role is responsible for balancing the targeted compensation needs of insurance businesses with the cohesiveness of the enterprise by delivering client-focused, innovative results. This individual contributor role partners with the Senior Director, Compensation Advisor and the Compensation Design Team to drive the implementation, communication, change management, and administration of global compensation programs in order to clearly, consistently, and transparently support the achievement of organizational objectives. Responsible for advising and providing compensation solutions related to staffing and retention needs. Delivering high-touch customer service and collaboration across key internal and external stakeholders.


  • Acts as strategic compensation partner, trusted advisor, and relationship manager for Talent team and senior business leaders across one of Liberty’s core insurance businesses.
  • Liaises with Compensation Design team to ensure business priorities and objectives are leveraged for Compensation Design initiatives.
  • Supports implementation of compensation programs and projects within assigned business unit area; program areas may include job evaluation, market pricing, base pay, incentives, and regulatory compliance/reporting/documentation.
  • Participates in negotiating the terms of the prioritized requests; helps to level set expectations across all parties (business, talent, & compensation).
  • Conducts detailed analyses to support the design, development, and evolution of compensation programs to better align with current industry trends and competitive landscape.
  • Acts as project manager, team member or advisor on large-scale compensation projects. When necessary, work with outside consultants to conduct special studies on pressing compensation issues.
  • Handles multiple concurrent and diverse initiatives. Independently and proactively address potential conflicts that impact current delivery commitments. Re-prioritize work and reschedule commitments as necessary. Respond to shifting priorities while maintaining progress of regularly scheduled work.
  • Proactively identifies opportunities to redefine and streamline processes. Partner with key stakeholders to develop and implement changes and recommend best practices. Document new procedures and workflow accordingly.


  • Strong knowledge of compensation programs and practices
  • Demonstrated success of implementing compensation programs that attract and retain employees and drive performance.
  • Excellent interpersonal and written/verbal communication skills; strong executive presence and ability to work closely with the highest management of the company.
  • Experience in project management including project scoping, planning, and execution
  • Strong ability to build rapport and trust with client groups to positively influence decisions and actions
  • Strong understanding of business needs and how to leverage compensation expertise to meet those needs; demonstrates flexibility and adaptability
  • Displays strong analytical, decision making and problem-solving skills
  • Advanced ability to manage multiple priorities and address competing points of view
  • Competencies typically acquired through a bachelor`s degree (preferably in Human Resources or Business) or equivalent experience, in addition to 7+ years of relevant and progressively more responsible experience, to include 5+ years of compensation experience.
